Oxbridge Course-College matching machine?

Hey

Anyone of you know any sites that show how many places each college is offering for a specific course. For example, i am thinking of applying for economics, but it takes ages for me tofind the no. of places there are for each college.

I really wanted to know (& still do) how many people applied to the same college for the same course. I asked at the students & admissions people during my interviews & they just said that it's best not to think about that & concentrate on my own application instead...fair point but it didn't fill me with confidence!

When I went for my interview there was a list up on the wall of the people being interviewed for my subject... not sure if i was supposed to see it though it's good for the confidence to know how many people you 'beat' though...

it seemed unfair to just take one person at a college for a certain subject...lonely.

I am the only Phil/Th student at my college and it's really, really depressing. Word of warning folks: try to avoid applying to a college which only has one place for your subject.

Oh no, I am going to be the only one studying arch and anth. Surely this would encourage mixing with members of other colleges?

You'll still mix with people from other colleges within your subject, and you'll make friends within your college. But it is nice to have someone else in your college to give you a hand if need be, or to compare notes with. As a medic, I never have this problem, but I can understand hildabeast's plight!

Something I only noticed yesterday - there is a difference in socialising "patterns" (not a sociologist, so I don't know the technical terms) between larger subjects and smaller ones. Medics, for example, are often viewed as being quite "cliquey" because there are quite a lot of us (12 in Clare) and we know each other very well as we have so much contact time together (plus we have an unfortunate habit of discussing dissection at lunchtime!). We make friends in other colleges, but these are generally only people we do practicals with and so on. If we do formal swaps, all the medics from one college go to another, and then there will be a return formal.

However, in smaller subjects everyone seems to know everyone and if you have formals, then everyone just goes to one college. This would never happen with medics, as there are just too many of us (plus, to get 300 first year medics together and add wine and pennies would be absolute carnage )

Is there anyway of finding out how many people were made offers for certain subject at certain colleges?

I get the impression that Cambridge colleges are very unwilling to give this info out, but I'm sure once you get to know the tutors they will tell you.

Well they offer about 60 places, and Arch and Anth is offered at all colleges......and given that about 12 of these places are at Girton, I would suspect that there will be another lonely arch and anther out there somewhere.

*just realised that I have assumed you are going to Cam, but I think that's a fair assumption*

Well my offer is for Cambridge...whether I go or not depends how much work I force myself into, AAA is proving harder than I thought! My offer is for Newnham, I think they take 3/4 people a year, they have 2 Director of Studies people, one archaeology & one social anthropology so I doubt I'll be the only one. 60? I didn't know it was so many!
