Hmm, I do agree with that, however I do also feel that sometimes there is ridiculously overt amounts of patriotism from students who, while they may "know people" or have been up and been out once for interview, have not actually lived there yet. Emma supposedly has this rep, but I find that in Cambridge, it's far less of a big thing than it is on here. Fresher enthusiasm is great, and I had it majorly last year, but it can blind you a little. After a while I began to realise that there are a number of colleges where I'd probably be just as happy as I am at Clare, and though now I wouldn't want to be anywhere else, it's not the only place I like.

To be honest, I think - once you arrive at Cambridge - you don't really care too much about college reputations, more about the people you meet from those colleges. In the end, once you are at Cambridge, life is what you make of it; if you find the college not 'sociable' enough for you, go out to Cindy's / join Societies / do formal-swaps with people you meet in lectures!

I dont think you are justified to say it's not as sociable as other colleges. My key point was that the people I know at cambridge (and that's people who arent here on UK-L) think of emma as a very good friendly college. Hence I believe you to be in a minority.

If we take your figuring on this, trinity would probably be the friendliest college because it has the most people, hence you are more likely to know people from trinity who socialise.
Emma looked plenty friendly to me.

Firstly i think i did make a point in saying friendly and sociable aren't interchangable. My next door neighbour is very friendly, but you would never see find anywhere which didn't involve food or lectures.

AS for stereotypes, I actually think that yoyu can make them to a degree. Not stupid things like 'peterhouse peeps are gay', but that emma peeps are generally very hardcore, or that kings don't actually go in for the whole cambridge thing.

And actually following my logic the most sociable colleges would be New hall and Newhnam, not trinity. Because they are the ones where people tend to get out there and mix with other colleges.

It's a sex thing

I will not have you badmouthing Emmanuel. Clearly you do not know anything, or are very socially blind! I applied to Emmanuel because I personally perceived it to be very friendly when I have visited it. I haven't heard a bad word said about Emmanuelites from other college's students until your comment here today! So you must be in a minority. Yes I agree that emma might not be THE friendliest college, because that's down to opinion (personally I think it is the friendliest college, but that's biased), but I dont think there is much doubt about it actually being a friendly college.

And they say I'm protective of my hopeful college to be
I'm going to Emma  and yes, I chose it for the ducks.
BUT to be honest I think these whole sweeping generalisations about colleges are just silly...I mean, someone I know applied to Peterhouse "because it's really right wing". Now surely, not everyone there votes BNP? Just like how I'm sure there are some right bastards in Emma as there are everywhere else.

Let's face it, the BNP is for nutters. I doubt very much that Peterhouse students support the BNP! However, if you were to say that they are more conservative in their political views, I would say you're probably right. The college has some famous conservative alumni, who sometimes visit as guest speakers - this is according to my friend who studies there at the moment.

Indeed the BNP are crazy. But then the leader of the BNP did study history and then law at Downing college
Note I don't mean that means that downing people are racist nutters. Was just pointing out where he went

Scary, isn't it? Thankfully we don't produce too many Nick Griffins.

Well...the BNP are not technially right-wing, but authoritarian. They are infact more economically leftwing than New Labour:rolleyes:

The truth is that on issues like health, transport, housing, protectionism and globalisation, their economics are left of Labour, let alone the Conservatives. It's in areas like police power, military power, school discipline, law and order, race and nationalism that the BNP's real extremism - as authoritarians - is clear.

Your post prompted me to look up the definition for right-wing. This is from http://www.webster-dictionary.org:

Right wing - those who support political or social or economic conservatism; those who believe that things are better left unchanged

Politicians who believe things are better left unchanged? Hmmm... doesn't sound like any politicians I know.

By things are better left unchanged read 'things were better in the old days' ie before the EEC/EU, before mad cow disease, and before railtrack.

Ironically in 99% cases it is the right-wingers who precipitate the problems.

One thing LABOUR HAS DONE WHICH IM ALL FOR (WHICH TORIES WILL NEVER TELL YOU) IS HUGGGGGGGELY INCREASE MED SCHOOL PLACES.
(soz caps lock)
Tho it means that you have bigger groups on ward rounds now. But that is the way. change moves from the bottom up.

First of all this entire poll has vastly restricted our choices - for a real result all colleges should be included. Secondly, half the people voting are not even at the university, and hence have not strong basis for their opinions save the rumour mill. I say this is a useless attempt that should be abandoned ASAP.

i think the poster either intends to choose from the shortlist given as the poll, or is taking the piss. i'm hoping it's the former

Hadn't thought of it that way... just thought the basic premise seemed flawed. Makes a bit more sense if 'pop' wants to go to one of them.
